Pricing note: State park reservations fill 6 months out for PCH campsites. We recommend booking anchor stops (Big Sur, Monterey) as soon as your dates are locked.

Your journey begins here

PCH earns its reputation. Big Sur is still the most dramatic stretch of coastal driving in the lower 48. Our advantage over the luxury-motorcoach operators: we put you in a rig small enough to actually enjoy the winding sections. Class B vans and compact Class Cs thread Big Sur comfortably. A 45-foot Class A does not.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

San Diego → Los Angeles

Easy opening day. Malibu Beach RV Park puts you on the sand with a Pacific-facing lot.

Day 2

Santa Barbara → Pismo Beach

Wine country pit stops. Pismo's Monarch Butterfly Grove if you're traveling Nov–Feb.

Day 3–4

Big Sur

Bixby Bridge, McWay Falls, Pfeiffer Beach purple sand. Book Big Sur campgrounds months ahead.

Day 5

Monterey & Carmel-by-the-Sea

Monterey Bay Aquarium, 17-Mile Drive, Carmel's fairytale cottages. Marina Dunes RV Resort is the best base.

Day 6–7

San Francisco

Cross the Golden Gate with an RV — bucket-list moment. Park at San Francisco RV Resort in Pacifica.

Day 8

Mendocino & Sonoma Coast

Dramatic cliffs, redwoods, wine-adjacent. Russian Gulch and MacKerricher State Parks for camping.

Day 9–10

Oregon Coast

Crossing into Oregon, Brookings south first. Cannon Beach (Haystack Rock), Ecola State Park.

Day 11–12

Return drive or fly-home

Two options: drive back on I-5 (faster) or reverse PCH (scenic). Concierge tier includes one-way positioning.

Questions about this trip

Is PCH safe to drive in an RV?

Yes, but choose the right unit. We steer guests away from 35+ foot Class A motorhomes for the Big Sur section — the road is narrow, winding, and has weight restrictions in several places. A Class B van or Class C under 28 feet handles it comfortably.

What about the Big Sur landslide?

Caltrans has reopened the full PCH corridor, but closures happen seasonally. We check current CalTrans status before every departure and reroute if needed — sometimes that means I-5 down and PCH back up, or vice versa.

Can I do just part of this trip?

Absolutely. The most popular short version is a 5-day San Diego → Big Sur loop. We also do 4-day Monterey/Carmel-only trips with delivery to Marina Dunes.

One-way rentals possible?

Yes via the concierge tier. We reposition the rig from Oregon/SF back to San Diego; you fly home. This costs more but saves 2–3 days and preserves your vacation.

“It was my first time renting an RV and they could not have made it any easier. They were polite, professional, and very accommodating. The RV was perfect for the event I attended. It was a 4 day festival in the desert and everything was perfect. Thank you Mike and our staff for making this experience flawless and amazing. I will definitely be recommending you to everyone.”

“I got a chance to finally book a trailer and loved the experience start to finish. We received top tier service and they always made it a point to treat people the right way, the unit worked out great and everything went as smooth as can be! I would highly recommend giving Stress Free RVs a chance to host your next trip.”

“Rented a trailer for a camping weekend and everything went really well. Was able to pickup trailer and everything worked out well for the weekend. Generator worked good to power the AC and keep everything cool even though we were camping in the desert heat with no shade. Definitely will rent from again.”
