Your journey begins here

Mammoth Mountain + the Eastern Sierra is one of California's most versatile RV destinations. Summer means Devils Postpile, Rainbow Falls, hot springs (Wild Willy's, Hilltop), and June Lake Loop. Winter means one of the West Coast's top ski resorts with RV hookups at the Mammoth Mountain RV Park. This is the trip that replaces a mountain-west Park City ski weekend — we consolidated the former 'ski' experience into Mammoth's winter mode.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

SD → Bishop

Through LA and up US-395. Bishop is the Eastern Sierra gateway town — stock up here.

Day 2–3

Mammoth Lakes

Summer: Minaret Vista, Twin Lakes. Winter: Mammoth Mountain ski area base.

Day 4

Devils Postpile National Monument

Summer only (road closed Nov–May). Columnar basalt formation + Rainbow Falls hike.

Day 5

June Lake Loop

A 16-mile loop of four alpine lakes. Best in October for fall color.

Day 6

Mono Lake + Bodie ghost town

Tufa towers at Mono Lake. Bodie is the West's best-preserved ghost town.

Day 7

Return via 395 or optional Yosemite

Two return routes: fast (395 → 15) or scenic (Tioga Pass through Yosemite, summer only).

Questions about this trip

Can I really ski from an RV?

Yes. Mammoth Mountain RV Park has full hookups (power, water, sewer) at the ski base. Park the rig, boot up, ski the day, return for dinner. It's one of the best setups in the West.

Summer or winter?

Both are exceptional. Summer Mammoth is about alpine lakes, hot springs, Devils Postpile, Bodie. Winter is skiing. Fall (late September–October) is the shoulder sweet spot — June Lake colors.

Why did you drop Park City?

Park City is a 12-hour drive each way from SD — not practical for a regional trip. Mammoth delivers the same ski experience 6 hours away with better RV infrastructure.

Do I need chains?

Required in winter. Our winter ski package includes them and an orientation on installation. Caltrans enforces chain control on US-395 below Mammoth during storms.

“It was my first time renting an RV and they could not have made it any easier. They were polite, professional, and very accommodating. The RV was perfect for the event I attended. It was a 4 day festival in the desert and everything was perfect. Thank you Mike and our staff for making this experience flawless and amazing. I will definitely be recommending you to everyone.”

“I got a chance to finally book a trailer and loved the experience start to finish. We received top tier service and they always made it a point to treat people the right way, the unit worked out great and everything went as smooth as can be! I would highly recommend giving Stress Free RVs a chance to host your next trip.”

“Rented a trailer for a camping weekend and everything went really well. Was able to pickup trailer and everything worked out well for the weekend. Generator worked good to power the AC and keep everything cool even though we were camping in the desert heat with no shade. Definitely will rent from again.”
