“It was my first time renting an RV and they could not have made it any easier. They were polite, professional, and very accommodating. The RV was perfect for the event I attended. It was a 4 day festival in the desert and everything was perfect. Thank you Mike and our staff for making this experience flawless and amazing. I will definitely be recommending you to everyone.”

About This Trip
Your journey begins here
Tahoe is a trip that rewards the right rig in the right season. Summer: south shore beaches, kayaking, Desolation Wilderness hikes. Fall: North Shore colors along SR-28. Winter: ski-base camping at Heavenly or Northstar. We're candid about the drive — SD to Tahoe is 8–9 hours each way, so we recommend a minimum 5-day trip to make the drive worth it, or a fly-in option with regional pickup.
The Route
Day-by-day itinerary
SD → Bakersfield / Mojave staging
Opening drive day. Overnight in the high desert to break the drive.
Mojave → South Lake Tahoe
Through Yosemite gate country. Arrive at South Lake Tahoe campground mid-afternoon.
Emerald Bay + D.L. Bliss SP
Most-photographed bay on the west coast. Kayak launch from Bliss State Park beaches.
North Shore — Kings Beach → Tahoe City
North Shore is quieter, forested, and has the best classic Tahoe vibe.
Truckee + Donner Lake
Historic Truckee downtown, Donner Memorial State Park. Great day trip.
Incline Village (Nevada side)
East Shore bike path is spectacular. Sand Harbor is Tahoe's best beach.
Return drive
One long day or two easy days. Concierge option: we retrieve the rig from Tahoe.

Questions about this trip
Is driving to Tahoe from SD practical?
It's 8.5 hours each way. For 5+ day trips it's worth it. For 3-day trips, fly into Reno and pick up from our Reno partner — we can coordinate.
Summer or winter?
Both are spectacular. Summer means beaches, hikes, and long days. Winter means ski-in camping and a completely different aesthetic. Winter rentals require the ski package — tires, chains, and cold-weather systems prep.
Can you deliver to Tahoe?
Yes, via concierge — we have done Tahoe delivery at the premium tier. It is a significant positioning cost (~10 hours each way for our team) so self-drive is usually the better value.
Altitude issues with the RV?
Carburetor-era engines struggle at 6,200 feet; modern fuel-injected engines in our fleet handle it without issue. You'll notice reduced power climbing the passes but no operational problems.

“I got a chance to finally book a trailer and loved the experience start to finish. We received top tier service and they always made it a point to treat people the right way, the unit worked out great and everything went as smooth as can be! I would highly recommend giving Stress Free RVs a chance to host your next trip.”
“Rented a trailer for a camping weekend and everything went really well. Was able to pickup trailer and everything worked out well for the weekend. Generator worked good to power the AC and keep everything cool even though we were camping in the desert heat with no shade. Definitely will rent from again.”
