Bombay Beach (Salton Sea) — Self-Drive Destination Guide
Bombay Beach is a small town on the east shore of the Salton Sea in California's low desert, known internationally as a contemporary art destination since the Bombay Beach Biennale launched in 2015. The town features permanent art installations across abandoned lots and structures, a striking Americana-meets-decay aesthetic, and some of the most surreal desert sunsets in the state.\n\nA note from Stress Free RVs: Bombay Beach is a popular self-drive destination for our renters, but it isn't a typical delivery location for us. Bombay Beach is not an organized RV resort or campground — it's the town itself, with no hookups, no formal sites, and no on-site water or dump services. Most guests who visit Bombay Beach do so as a stop on a larger desert road trip, parking in dispersed areas or making it a day-trip from a nearby campground (Salton Sea State Recreation Area to the north, or Anza-Borrego to the west).\n\nIf Bombay Beach is on your itinerary, we recommend renting a drivable motorhome from us — pick up at our San Diego location, drive yourself to the Salton Sea, and continue on to other desert stops at your own pace. Visit in the cooler months (November-April); summer in the Salton Sea basin is brutally hot (well over 110°F is common).

No. Bombay Beach is a small Salton Sea town, not an organized campground or RV resort. There are no hookups, formal sites, or reservations.
Why is Bombay Beach worth visiting?
The Bombay Beach Biennale (launched 2015) has created a permanent collection of contemporary art installations across the town. It is also one of the most striking abandoned-Americana settings in California, with a surreal Salton Sea shoreline.
Does Stress Free RVs deliver to Bombay Beach?
Not typically — Bombay Beach is best suited for guests renting a drivable motorhome and visiting on their own. We are happy to discuss custom arrangements for groups or events, but the standard Stress Free workflow is self-drive for this destination.
Where do most visitors stay overnight?
Most visitors stop briefly in Bombay Beach as part of a larger desert trip, and stay overnight at the nearby Salton Sea State Recreation Area, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, or one of the Coachella Valley RV resorts.
When should I visit?
November through April is the comfortable window. Summer in the Salton Sea basin is brutally hot and not recommended.

Don't leave the awning open when not underneath it
Wind gusts can flip or break awnings in seconds. If you're not actively under it — especially overnight or during weather — retract it.

When you leave the unit unattended, close windows and roof vents. Prevents weather damage, dust intrusion, theft, and pest entry.

Clean the unit and remove all personal belongings
Sweep, wipe down surfaces, take out trash, and double-check storage cabinets. We do a full turnover cleaning — your job is to leave it in reasonable condition.
Note any issues and communicate with our staff
Anything broke or stopped working during the trip? Tell us at return. Helps us address it before the next renter and keeps the inspection process honest.
Empty and flush waste tanks + water
Black tank → gray tank → fresh water. Use a designated dump station — never on the side of the road. (Skip this step if you purchased the Empty and Flush Waste Tanks add-on; we'll handle it.)
Refill propane and refuel
Return propane and fuel to the levels documented at trip start. Saves you the per-gallon refueling charge ($20/gal + labor) listed in Posted Rates.
Conduct trip-end inspection
Walk through the unit with our staff, confirm condition, sign the trip-end inspection form. This is what releases your security deposit hold.
Leave a 5-star review (and tell us privately what to improve)
Public reviews help other renters find us. Private feedback helps us improve. We genuinely want both — separately, so honest critique never costs you a star.
A clean return means no extra charges. If the unit needs additional cleaning beyond standard turnover, the labor rate from Posted Rates applies — most renters complete the steps above and never see those charges.
